Our Beliefs

Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as the only source of our beliefs. The Old and New Testaments are inspired by God. They are and will always be the only standard of faith and practice for Christians.

what do seventh-day adventists believe

God

God is love. There is only one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is the Creator and Sovereign of the earth and heavens and all that is created. Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who became man, lived a sinless life, and died as a substitutionary sacrifice for our sins, accomplishing the salvation of humanity. The Holy Spirit is the Great Comforter that leads God’s Church after Jesus’ Resurrection and ascension into Heaven.

Humanity and the Great Controversy

Man and woman were created perfect, made in the image of God. When they disobeyed God, all humanity has become involved in the great controversy between Christ and Satan regarding the character of God. This conflict originated in heaven and continues on in our world until Jesus Christ comes again in glory at His second coming to put an end to evil and sin.

God’s Plan of Redemption

In his love, God has never abandoned the fallen humanity. He expressed His desire to dwell among people by instructing Moses to build the Old Testament Sanctuary as a representation of the Heavenly Sanctuary. Jesus Himself was represented by the High Priest; the link between the eternal God and fallen humanity. He is the sacrificial lamb that makes atonement for our sins and grants us salvation.

After His Resurrection, Jesus went to heaven where he is now our High Priest, our Advocate, and Intercessor, who constantly takes our requests for forgiveness, and forgives our sins based on His sacrifice on the cross. Through this work in the Most Holy Place, Jesus not only forgives us our sins, but He transforms our character according to God’s will so that we can live our lives in purity and love.

God's Law and Grace

God’s character is the great principles of God’s law that are embodied in the Ten Commandments and exemplified in the life of Christ. These commandments are unchangeable and still binding, including the fourth commandment that reminds us to worship our Creator on the seventh day of the week which is the Sabbath.

Salvation is received as a gift, through faith, and cannot be earned by works and merits. Our obedience to God’s will, His commandments, is a result of our faith and love for Jesus and His transformational power, as we allow Him to be the Lord of our heart and receive the active work of the Holy Spirit.

Growing in Christ

By His death on the cross, Jesus triumphed over the forces of evil. He who subdued the demonic spirits during His earthly ministry has broken their power and made certain their ultimate doom. Jesus’ victory gives us victory over the evil forces that still seek to control us, as we walk with Him in peace, joy, and assurance of His love. Now the Holy Spirit dwells within us and empowers us.

In this new freedom in Jesus, we are called to grow into the likeness of His character. God wants us to grow intellectually by studying His Word; spiritually by communing with Him in daily prayer and meditating on His Word and on His providence; and physically by treating our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit and obeying the biblical health principles.

Jesus Christ’s Return and His Final Act of Restoration

Jesus Christ’s Return is literal and full of glory. At His triumphal Second Coming, all the believers who are dead will be resurrected with immortal bodies, the believers who are still alive will also be changed to immortal bodies and they will all go to heaven for a period of 1000 years, called the Millennium. The earth will then be Satan’s prison for 1000 years.

At the end of the Millennium, Jesus will exert a last act of judgment by destroying all evil; Satan, his angles, and all the wicked people of all ages. This destruction is completed in the Lake of Fire, the fires of hell. Since no human being has an immortal soul, there is no eternal Hell of fire and torment. In His love, God will put an eternal end to evil and sin. Then Jesus will exert his last act of restoration by recreating a new earth and a new heaven to be inhabited eternally by the saved.

God’s Last Day People

In the last days before the glorious Second Coming of Jesus Christ, a time of widespread apostasy and the combining of different pagan concepts and Christian beliefs, God has called a community of believers to recover the original Biblical truths received by the apostles from Jesus. Their mission is to proclaim the last warning message presented in the Three Angels Message of Revelation 14. They are the people who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
