Space Rescue: Jesus Came to Rescue Us

The story of salvation is the greatest rescue mission in the history of the universe.

During a special Vacation Bible School program at Fannin County Seventh-day Adventist Church, Pastor Rusu presented the message “Space Rescue.” Designed especially for children and families, the sermon traced the great controversy from the rebellion of Lucifer in heaven to the return of Jesus and the final restoration of God’s kingdom.

The message was simple enough for children to understand, yet deep enough to remind every adult of the central truth of the gospel:

We cannot rescue ourselves from sin. Jesus came to rescue us.

A Special VBS Celebration

The program began with songs, photographs, videos, and reports from the week of Vacation Bible School.

The children had learned about:

• The great controversy between Christ and Satan
• Creation and the fall of humanity
• The Ten Commandments
• God’s love and mercy
• The Bible as our guidebook
• The death and resurrection of Jesus
• The new earth
• Christ’s promised return

The entire VBS theme followed the plan of salvation from heaven, through the history of this world, and finally back to heaven.

War in Heaven

Revelation 12:7 says:

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought.”

Before this conflict, heaven was a place of perfect peace, harmony, and love.

Lucifer was a highly honored angel, but he gradually stopped loving God supremely. Love for God was replaced by love for himself. Pride grew into rebellion, and Lucifer began persuading other angels to question God’s character and authority.

The great controversy did not begin because God was unjust. It began because Lucifer rejected God’s government of love.

God’s Law Is a Wall of Protection

During VBS, the children learned that the Ten Commandments are like a wall of protection.

God did not give His commandments to destroy happiness or freedom. He gave them because He loves us.

The commandments protect:

• Our relationship with God
• Our families
• Human life
• Marriage
• Property
• Truthfulness
• Contentment
• Our relationships with one another

Jesus summarized God’s law in Matthew 22:37–39:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Love is the foundation of every commandment.

The first four commandments explain how we love God. The final six explain how we love our neighbors.

The Conflict Came to Earth

The rebellion did not remain in heaven.

Satan brought his deception to the Garden of Eden. God had given Adam and Eve a beautiful world and only one restriction: they were not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

That command provided them with a real choice.

They could trust God’s love and wisdom, or they could believe the serpent’s accusations.

Satan asked Eve:

“Has God indeed said?”

That question planted doubt about God’s goodness.

Satan continues using the same method today. He encourages people to question whether God truly loves them and whether His commandments are for their good.

Love and Trust Require a Choice

God does not force anyone to love Him.

Love must be freely given.

Trust must be chosen.

Obedience is also a choice.

Adam and Eve chose to listen to Satan rather than God. Romans 6:16 teaches that we become servants of the one we choose to obey.

Through that choice, humanity came under the bondage of sin. Satan effectively hijacked planet Earth.

This explains why our world contains suffering, violence, selfishness, disease, and death. Humanity departed from the government of God and came under the influence of the enemy.

God Launched the Rescue Mission

God did not abandon the human family.

Immediately after the fall, He gave the first promise of salvation.

Genesis 3:15 declared that the Seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head.

That promised Seed was Jesus Christ.

From the beginning, God had a plan to rescue humanity from sin and destroy the works of the enemy.

The entire Bible reveals the unfolding of that rescue plan.

We Cannot Rescue Ourselves

Romans 3:23 tells us:

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Children and adults share the same fundamental need. We are all affected by sin, and none of us can rescue ourselves.

Education cannot remove guilt.

Money cannot purchase salvation.

Good behavior cannot erase past sins.

Religious membership cannot replace conversion.

We need a Savior.

Jesus Came to Rescue Us

Jesus stepped into our world.

He became fully human while remaining fully divine. He experienced temptation, sorrow, weariness, rejection, and pain.

Yet He never sinned.

Jesus perfectly obeyed the commandments of God and fulfilled the great law of love.

He loved humanity so completely that He willingly died in our place.

The cross shows both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s love.

Jesus did not remain in the grave. He rose from the dead, defeating Satan’s claim over humanity and opening the way to eternal life.

Rescue Is Offered, Not Forced

Although Jesus paid the price for every person, He does not force anyone to accept salvation.

Each person must choose.

Our lives are shaped by the choices we make every day—and even every hour.

Our choices affect:

• Our thoughts
• Our habits
• Our relationships
• Our character
• Our relationship with God
• Our eternal destiny

Christ offers rescue, forgiveness, power, and eternal life. We must decide whether to receive Him.

Two Men and Two Choices

Pastor Rusu illustrated the importance of choice through the connected stories of Edward “Easy Eddie” O’Hare and his son, Navy pilot Butch O’Hare.

Easy Eddie worked as a lawyer for criminal leader Al Capone. Although his position brought wealth and comfort, he eventually realized that he was leaving a destructive legacy for his son.

He chose to cooperate with law enforcement and testify against Capone, knowing that the decision could cost him his life.

His son, Butch O’Hare, later became a decorated naval pilot during World War II. When nine enemy bombers threatened his aircraft carrier, Butch attacked them alone and helped protect the ship and its crew.

One man chose to correct the direction of his life. The next generation demonstrated extraordinary courage.

Our choices do not affect only us. They influence our children, families, churches, and communities.

A Good Name Is Better Than Riches

Proverbs 22:1 says:

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches.”

The world encourages children to pursue money, recognition, influence, and success.

But Scripture teaches that character is more valuable than wealth.

The best name we can carry is the name of Christ reflected in our hearts and lives.

A person may possess many things and still lose what matters most. A person who belongs to Jesus possesses eternal treasure.

The Wages of Sin and the Gift of God

Romans 6:23 presents two very different outcomes:

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin pays wages.

Those wages are death.

But salvation is not a wage we earn. It is a gift God freely offers through Jesus Christ.

We may choose rebellion, independence, and sin—or we may choose Christ, forgiveness, and life.

Jesus Has Already Won

At the cross, Jesus won the decisive victory over Satan.

The enemy still causes suffering, but his defeat is certain. The rescue mission will soon be completed.

Revelation declares that the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ.

The universe will once again be governed entirely by peace, harmony, righteousness, and love.

Jesus Is Coming Again

In John 14, Jesus gave this promise:

“I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again.”

The same Jesus who came to rescue humanity from sin will return to gather those who have chosen Him.

The Second Coming will complete the rescue mission.

There will be:

• No more pain
• No more fear
• No more tears
• No more death
• No more rebellion
• No more separation from God

The greatest joy of heaven will not be its beauty. The greatest joy will be the presence of Jesus.

Choose Life

The appeal of the sermon was direct:

Choose Jesus.

Choose to trust Him.

Choose to receive His forgiveness.

Choose to obey His Word.

Choose to develop a relationship with Him.

Choose life.

Children must make that choice, and adults must make it too.

No parent, pastor, teacher, or church can make the decision for someone else. Each person must personally receive Christ as Savior and Rescuer.

Practical Lessons for Families

Families can continue the lessons of Space Rescue VBS by:

• Reading the Bible together
• Reviewing the Ten Commandments
• Teaching children that God’s law is based on love
• Talking about daily choices
• Praying together each morning and evening
• Explaining the plan of salvation
• Encouraging children to ask questions
• Helping children develop personal faith in Jesus
• Preparing together for Christ’s return
• Sharing the gospel with other families

Why This Message Matters

The Space Rescue message matters because children are growing up in a world filled with conflicting voices.

They need to know:

• Where sin began
• Why suffering exists
• Who Jesus is
• Why Christ died
• What God’s law means
• How Satan deceives
• Why their choices matter
• How to receive eternal life
• That Jesus is coming again

These truths provide children with a biblical framework for understanding the world and making faithful choices.

Closing Appeal

Planet Earth has been caught in the conflict between Christ and Satan, but Jesus has not abandoned us.

He came to rescue us.

He died to save us.

He rose to give us hope.

He offers eternal life as a free gift.

And He is coming again.

The question each of us must answer is simple:

Will we choose Jesus as our Rescuer?

Short Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You for coming to rescue us from sin. Thank You for living a perfect life, dying in our place, and offering us eternal life. Help our children, parents, grandparents, and families to make good choices every day. Teach us to love Your commandments, trust Your Word, and grow in a deeper relationship with You. Prepare us for the day when You return and complete the rescue mission. In Your name, amen.
