How to Know You Are Born Again Part 1

Many sincere people ask an important spiritual question: How do I know if I am truly born again? That is not a shallow question. It reaches to the heart of conversion, salvation, and our personal walk with Jesus Christ.

In this message from Fannin County Seventh-day Adventist Church, Pastor Rusu brings attention to one of the most important experiences in the Christian life: the new birth. It is possible to know Bible truth, attend church, and speak the language of faith, yet still miss the transforming work God wants to do in the heart. The good news is that Christ does not leave us in confusion. He calls us to a real, living, life-changing experience with Him.

What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

To be born again means more than adopting a religious identity. It means receiving a new heart from God. The new birth is not merely external reform. It is an inward work of grace. It is the Spirit of God awakening the soul, convicting of sin, leading to repentance, and creating new desires.

A born again life is not rooted in pride, performance, or outward appearance. It is rooted in surrender to Christ. The person who is born again begins to think differently, desire differently, and live differently because Jesus is now working within.

This does not mean instant perfection. It does mean a new direction.

Why This Matters So Much

This subject matters because eternity is too serious for false assurance. Many people want peace with God, but they try to find it through feelings, comparison with others, or confidence in religious activity. None of those can take the place of a genuine experience with Christ.

The new birth matters because:

  • It is the difference between outward religion and inward transformation
  • It is the difference between self-led living and Spirit-led living
  • It is the difference between knowing about Jesus and personally knowing Him
  • It prepares the believer for a life of obedience, mission, and practical godliness

From a biblical perspective, obedience is never the cause of salvation, but it is the fruit of a changed life. When Christ changes the heart, the life begins to reflect that change.

Signs of a Born Again Experience

Although only God fully knows the heart, Scripture gives clear evidence of spiritual life. A born again believer will not be sinless, but there will be marks of divine work in the soul.

1. A new attitude toward sin

The born again person no longer makes peace with sin. There is sorrow over wrong, conviction when conscience is pricked, and a desire to turn away from what dishonors God.

2. A new love for Jesus Christ

True conversion always lifts up Christ. A born again heart is drawn to Him, trusts Him, and longs to know Him more deeply.

3. A new hunger for the Word of God

When a person is spiritually alive, the Bible becomes more than a book of information. It becomes living bread for the soul.

4. A growing desire to obey

Obedience is not an attempt to earn favor. It becomes the natural response of love. The believer begins to say, “Lord, what would You have me to do?”

5. A new love for others

The new birth changes how we see people. Pride softens. Bitterness is challenged. Compassion grows. Love becomes more practical and visible.

6. A burden for holiness and readiness

A truly converted life becomes serious about preparation for Christ’s return. There is a growing desire to live faithfully, serve humbly, and walk closely with God.

What the New Birth Is Not

This is also important. Many people confuse spiritual excitement with spiritual conversion.

The new birth is not:

  • Mere church attendance
  • Emotional enthusiasm without surrender
  • Good moral behavior without Christ
  • Knowledge of doctrine without a changed heart
  • A one-time profession with no continuing fruit

A person may have a religious form and still need the converting grace of God. That is why this subject must be approached honestly and prayerfully.

How to Respond If You Are Unsure

If you are unsure whether you are born again, do not despair. Bring that very question to God. The Lord does not turn away the sincere seeker.

Here are some practical steps:

  • Pray honestly and ask God for a new heart
  • Confess known sin without excuse
  • Surrender your life fully to Jesus
  • Spend time daily in the Word of God
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to lead your thoughts and choices
  • Walk in the light God has already shown you
  • Stay close to a faithful church family and sound biblical teaching

God is more willing to save than we are to ask. He delights to receive the brokenhearted and to create new life where there has been spiritual dryness.

A Message of Hope

The invitation of the gospel is not only for the openly rebellious. It is also for the religious, the weary, the confused, and the sincere seeker. Christ offers more than improvement. He offers rebirth.

That means your past does not have to define your future. Your failures do not have to be your identity. In Jesus, there is cleansing, renewal, and power for a different life.

To be born again is to become a new creation in Christ. It is to live by grace, walk by faith, and bear fruit through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Closing Appeal

Do not settle for appearances. Do not be content with a name, a label, or a routine. Ask the Lord for the genuine experience of the new birth. Let Christ do in the heart what no human effort can accomplish.

If your desire is to know that you are truly born again, come to Jesus in humility, faith, and surrender. He still changes lives.

Prayer

Lord, we thank You for the promise of a new heart and a new life in Christ. Search us, cleanse us, and create in us what we cannot create in ourselves. Deliver us from empty religion and lead us into genuine conversion. Fill us with Your Spirit, give us love for truth, and make us ready to follow Jesus fully. In His name, amen.
